John,
Today is May Day, also known as International Workers’ Day. It’s a day to fight back against the billionaires who are stealing from working people—and people are rising up across the country.

(If you can’t make an event today, that’s OK! Some are happening over the weekend, so it’s worth taking a look.)
You can also check out https://maydaystrong.org/ to find out more about today’s National Day of Action, and about the coalition of organizations and unions promoting it. The website says:
“Trump and his billionaire profiteers are trying to create a race to the bottom—on wages, on benefits, on dignity itself. This May Day we are fighting back. We are demanding a country that puts our families over their fortunes—public schools over private profits, healthcare over hedge funds, prosperity over free market politics.”
This past month’s Hands Off actions have been some of the largest protests in U.S. history, with millions of Americans showing up to fight for our future.
Let’s continue that momentum today. Sign up for a May Day event near you.
May Day started here in the United States after 80,000 people showed up to rally and demand the 8-hour work day, in Chicago’s Haymarket Square in 1886. Police attacked and killed protesters, and then framed primarily immigrant workers for violence (who were later pardoned).
These Haymarket events sparked yearly worldwide celebrations of the labor movement on May 1, beginning in the late 1800s. But because of the suppression of the labor movement in the U.S., it took until 1937 to pass a federal law protecting the 8-hour workday nationwide.
Often our movements build cultural power before actual policy change, which can take a long time—especially when it comes to federal policy, which impacts the entire country.
But our movements can have worldwide impacts right away.
We are powerful, and our work can inspire more movements and more progress in places we’ll never even know about. We can shape the future.

Thank you. Every day I’m resisting Trump and the right-wing agenda, including their cruel cuts to the social programs that millions of people rely on. But change has never started inside the halls of power. It starts on the outside, with the people—and elected officials follow the people’s lead.
I’m grateful for the growing resistance movement, and I promise to continue fighting alongside you for a better future for us all.
In solidarity,
Rashida

John,
This week, Donald Trump visited my home state of Michigan to celebrate his first 100 days in office. He promoted his attacks on our communities, including by sharing a video at his rally that highlighted his administration’s illegal deportations.
He held his rally in a neighboring congressional district―the same district where we and local activists held a community town hall last week to hold their Republican member of Congress accountable and push him to vote against a right-wing agenda that attacks Medicaid, SNAP nutrition benefits, and more.
Through Trump’s first 100 days, our communities have shown incredible strength and resilience, rallying in cities and towns in all 50 states, including outside of federal buildings like Veterans Hospitals and Social Security field offices. The resistance is growing and together we’re fighting back against fascism.
This Thursday May 1st is May Day―a day to celebrate workers and continue our shared struggle for workers’ rights and wages. This is our next chance to make our voices heard and resist the anti-worker agenda of the Trump administration.

Through these first 100 days, we have seen the power of our resistance movement.
This week, student movement leader Mohsen Mahdawi has been temporarily released from ICE custody, due in large part to our shared activism, demanding his due process rights.
At the same time, the Trump administration has restored the legal status of thousands of international students whose student visas had been revoked. This is thanks to public pressure.
The Trump administration is also consistently losing in court, losing 93% of the cases being heard. Trump and Elon Musk are also losing in the court of public opinion, with approval ratings in the negative. Their agenda is unpopular, and it’s on us to keep pushing for a future that works for working people, and all who call this country home.

The coalition of grassroots groups and unions putting on May Day events explains:
“This is a war on working people—and we will not stand down. They’re defunding our schools, privatizing public services, attacking unions, and targeting immigrant families with fear and violence. Working people built this nation and we know how to take care of each other. We won’t back down—we will never stop fighting for our families and the rights and freedoms that propel opportunity and a better life for all Americans. Their time is up.”
Thank you for standing with me as, together, we resist an authoritarian administration and reclaim our government for the people, not the billionaires.
With you in this fight for a better future,
Rashida
