John,

If companies were dumping oil into rivers, lakes and oceans and doing nothing to clean it up, you'd be upset, right?

Each year, trillions of plastic pellets are spilling into our waterways, polluting the environment and sickening aquatic life.[1][] Like a solid oil spill, companies dump or spill these pellets into our environment, but they don't have to clean it up.

Join us in combating these "solid oil spills." Tell our governor it's time to take action on plastic pellet pollution.

These pellets, known as nurdles, are tiny beads of plastic made from natural gas or oil. Nurdles are the building blocks of plastic production; they're shipped across the world to be melted down and molded into water bottles, plastic bags and countless other items.

Lightweight and numerous, they often spill during transport -- some plastic factories even wash dirty nurdles rendered unusable down drains.[2]

These tiny pellets can cause huge problems.

An estimated 200,000 metric tons of nurdles pour into our oceans annually. They're now the second greatest source of ocean microplastics.[3][,4]

As they float across huge distances, nurdles absorb toxic chemicals including DDT, PCBs and mercury. Due to their resemblance to fish eggs, these toxic blobs are often mistaken for food by sealife. Fish, birds, turtles and crustaceans have all been recorded consuming nurdles.[5]

Tell our governor today: If we're going to address plastic pollution, we need to stop plastic nurdle spills.

If they weren't bad enough already, nurdle spills are also nearly impossible to contain. Gathering spilled nurdles is like trying to collect grains of rice dumped from an airplane.

Considering the devastating effects of these spills, it's preposterous that plastic producers can dump millions of pellets and face few to no repercussions.[6]

It's time for our leaders to staunch the flow of plastic pellets into our waterways. Send a message to our governor today.
