When I think of teachers doing their jobs at school, I see dedicated educators holding dry erase markers, not guns.
But if the sponsors of House Bill 193 [1] and Senate Bill 280 [2] get their way, that’s going to change, because HB 193 and SB 280 create pathways for some teachers, school personnel, and volunteers to carry handguns on private school educational property.
We can’t let that happen. These bills could be voted on in the next 24 hours - so please, email your NC lawmakers now and tell them to vote NO on all bills allowing guns in NC schools! [[link removed]]

Right now, the only people allowed to carry guns on private school grounds are law enforcement officers. Law enforcement working in schools receive 868 hours [3] of basic training as officers PLUS annual in-service training PLUS additional training for working in schools. That is the amount needed to know how to respond appropriately in a crisis, and when force is justified.
It takes just 8 hours of training to qualify for a concealed carry permit. If either of these bills becomes law, it would allow anyone with written permission from school leaders and either a concealed carry permit OR people who are exempt from needing one to carry a handgun on private school educational property. These are not the people we want making split-second decisions about when to use a gun around our children.
