John,
The IRS made a promise and now it’s breaking it. For years, undocumented immigrants were told their tax information would be protected from any other use―most prominently, immigration enforcement. They stepped up, paying billions in taxes, contributing to our government and economy, and trusting the system. Now, under Trump’s directive, that trust is being weaponized against them.
The IRS just reached an outrageous agreement with ICE to hand over tax information for the administration’s deportation efforts.[1] This betrayal won’t just devastate immigrant families, it will drive communities deeper into the shadows, adding billions to the deficit when fewer people feel safe paying taxes.
Trump and his billionaire cronies want you to believe this is about “law and order.” It’s not. It's about scapegoating hardworking immigrants while the real tax cheats―like billionaires and billion-dollar corporations―keep evading their obligations.
In fact, undocumented immigrants paid $96.7 billion in taxes in 2022―and paid at a rate higher than some of America's wealthiest individuals and major corporations.[2]
Congress must act immediately. Tell your senators and representative: stop the IRS from collaborating with ICE. Protect immigrant families. Protect our tax system. Protect our democracy.
Trump's targeting of mixed-status and undocumented families has always been about cruelty, not justice. While billionaires reap massive tax breaks and corporations stash trillions offshore, Trump and his DHS cronies are spending our tax dollars terrorizing families who actually contribute more to the economy than many Fortune 500 companies and their millionaire CEOs.
This reckless misuse of IRS data will hurt us all. It means fewer taxes collected. More debt. And it gives exploitative employers even more leverage to abuse undocumented workers without consequence.
We can't allow this. Congress must force the IRS to keep its word: tax information should never be weaponized for deportation. This is a fight for immigrant rights. It's a fight for tax fairness. It’s about keeping our word and basic human decency.
Stand up today. Demand Congress end the IRS-ICE collaboration. Our immigrant neighbors deserve protection, not betrayal.
Thank you for standing up for immigrant communities and tax justice,
David Kass
