This week, our friends at the Freedom to Learn Network have kicked off their National Week of Action to speak out about the attacks on Black History across the country!
The Freedom to Learn Network is an incredible coalition of the leading civil rights, human rights, and social justice organizations united against the widespread attempts to limit antiracist education in US schools and undermine democracy.
Here are 5 ways you can get involved in their efforts:
1. Show up for Black History on Saturday, May 3rd!
If you are in Washington D.C., gather at the John A. Wilson Building Steps at 11am show support of Black history and museums! Get inspired by the program featuring calls to action from civil and human rights leaders, faith leaders, educators & parents and then walk with us to the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
Even if you live far from Washington, D.C., you can still show up for Black History and the Freedom to Learn on May 3rd! Download Freedom to Learn #HandsOffOurHistory posters or create your own to visit your city’s Black History museum or your local library’s Black History section. Take a selfie on location and post it with #HandsOffOurHistory.
3. Take the Uncovering Black History Challenge - See the instructions here.
4. Urge young people to sign up for a free, digital Books Unbanned Library Card through our F2L partner Brooklyn Public Library to access Black Studies, Black History, and Black Literature books in defiance of the censorship of Black knowledge. Post that you did using #HandsOffOurHistory.
