John,
This May Day (May 1), workers, educators and families are marching, organizing and demanding a future rooted in dignity, justice and opportunity for all. It’s clear that 100 days into his second term, President Donald Trump is driving the economy into a ditch—stripping workers’ union rights, attacking public schools and universities, and shredding the safety net by going after Medicaid and Social Security. Why? To pay for even more tax cuts for his billionaire friends.
And that’s not all. He’s targeting some of the most vulnerable among us—immigrants—flouting democracy and disappearing legal U.S. residents without due process. He has put protected locations like schools and places of worship at risk of being raided. We’ve seen reports of federal agents breaking car windows, detaining immigrants in court hearings, and forcing their way into homes. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents have even deported a 2-year-old in Louisiana.
America’s history is filled with diverse stories of immigrants who came in bondage, fled fascism, escaped religious persecution and wanted to give their families a better life. Yet, these coordinated actions are designed to terrorize families and communities, and they are part of a cruel campaign to silence dissent, intimidate marginalized communities and smash the foundations that sustain our democracy.
So the time is now. On May Day, we raise our voices and show our collective power. We are acting together, in community, to stand up for a better life and against the chaos and cruelty of the Trump agenda.
Here are three ways to get involved on May Day.
-
Join a local May Day rally near you: More than 800 AFT local and state affiliates are organizing on May 1. Find a local rally near you!
-
Share our multilingual immigration resources: Because everyone deserves a safe, welcoming place to live, learn and work. Visit the AFTvotes immigration hub.
-
Watch and share Kilmar Abrego Garcia’s story: Kilmar, a legal resident of Maryland and father, was detained and sent to a Salvadoran prison without due process. His story reveals the cruelty of this administration’s immigration policies—and why we must speak out. Watch and share.
This May Day, the choice is clear: chaos or community. Trump has chosen chaos. WE CHOOSE COMMUNITY.
Let’s stand together—in solidarity and in action—to protect our kids, our communities and our future.
Please get involved this May Day.
Thank you.
In solidarity,
Randi Weingarten
AFT President
