No one ever said progressive organizing in Texas was easy.
After our remarkable string of victories, winning all five of our elections last November, it feels like Greg Abbott, Ken Paxton, and their allies at the Lege are more determined than ever to push back against progress.
This means that in addition to our work at the local level, we've been staying on top of this legislative session, identifying bills designed to impede Texans’ ability to bring ballot initiatives.
Last Friday, our Executive Director Catina Voellinger spoke out against one such bad bill, HB 5082, that would unconstitutionally give the Attorney General the power to block local elections before voters even have a chance to weigh in:
“If the AG in the future thinks that a city has violated state law, the AG can take it to court. And if it poses a real threat, the courts can issue an injunction. That’s the process. That’s the safeguard. HB 5082 is not about strengthening that system—it’s about sidestepping it.”
Organizing Texas at both the state and local levels is crucial to ensuring that we can continue to bring progressive policies to the communities that urgently need them.
