** Valley of the Sun United Way awards Fair Chance grant funding
------------------------------------------------------------

Valley of the Sun United Way recently announced that seven nonprofit organizations in Maricopa County received a total of $120,000 in grant funding to advance Fair Chance programs and initiatives for justice-impacted individuals.

Catalyzed by a grant from the JPMorganChase Foundation, Valley of the Sun United Way launched a Fair Chance Collaborative ([link removed]) in 2024 with the mission to help address the multi-dimensional needs of individuals in the Phoenix metropolitan area who have been involved with the justice system. The Collaborative’s goals include providing technical assistance to nonprofits that assist justice-involved individuals as well as to employers working to increase Fair Chance hiring and retention.

“As part of our community-driven MC2026 plan for Mighty Change, we’re bringing together employers, service providers, public and government stakeholders, educational institutions and others to increase Fair Chance hiring and supportive services so those involved in the justice system have every opportunity to succeed—for themselves, for their families and for our community,” said Emma Garcia, chief community development and engagement officer at Valley of the Sun United Way.

** Celebrating National Volunteer Month
------------------------------------------------------------

At Valley of the Sun United Way, our work is all about people – not just the individuals we serve, but the volunteers and donors who make our programs and initiatives possible. These dedicated supporters are the backbone of our mission to build stronger communities and empower individuals to thrive.

Our volunteers bring diverse skills, experiences and perspectives that enable our organization to reach more people and create lasting change. Whether they're mentoring youth, packing heat relief kits, supporting the unhoused or serving on a committee, their hands-on assistance directly impacts those in need. This direct, tangible support is invaluable, ensuring critical resources reach the people who need them most, when they need them most.

To all of our volunteers, THANK YOU for your unwavering support by sharing your time and talents with us and with our partners. Together, we're building a stronger, more vibrant future for all.

** Arizona Republic: Literacy Hub in Avondale school boosting reading scores by getting parents involved
------------------------------------------------------------

As originally published by The Arizona Republic ([link removed]) on April 22, 2025:

"Lattie Coor School in Avondale saw an increase in students' literacy rates thanks to their Literacy Hub, a supplemental reading program that launched in the 2022-23 school year and is as much for parents as it is for students.

"'Gone are the days where parents were separate from the school,' said Principal Geovanni Orozco. 'We know that a child comes with a family.'

"Lattie Coor, part of the Avondale Elementary School District, had 77% of students in the 2023-24 school year meet or exceed benchmarks under the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills assessment, a widely used method to determine literacy skills among kindergartners to eighth graders.

"That same school year, thirty-seven students whose abilities were far below expectations for the DIBELS assessment participated in the Literacy Hub. By the end of the year, 83% of those students met or exceeded expectations."
