John, democracy is under attack in North Carolina.

The failed candidate in last November’s state supreme court race has sued to try to throw out enough legally valid ballots to overturn his loss. And a new ruling greenlights his request to disenfranchise military personnel and overseas citizens.

Let's be clear: This decision abandons the judiciary’s most basic role, to protect the rights of the people, and sanctions an outright attempt to steal an election.

This alarming development is a stark, present-day example of what we've seen throughout our nation’s history: far-right leaders going to extraordinary lengths to bypass democratic principles — all in their relentless pursuit of power.

Whether it's through onerous voting requirements, partisan gerrymanders, or attempting to use courts to invalidate legitimate election results, the goal is the same — to undermine the fundamental right of Americans to have their voices heard.

But John, we are not powerless observers. Our grassroots movement is working across the country to secure fairness in our democracy and ensure every American has an equal say in our government. And when we work together, we can make it happen.

It continues to be the case that there is no “off year” in the fight for fair electoral maps — the work we do in 2025 will be critical to advancing the fight for our democracy in 2026, 2028, and beyond:

• Our affiliate, the National Redistricting Foundation, is actively involved in court cases that could affect the makeup of up to nine congressional districts — where we must make sure voters are fairly represented.

• We’re preparing to stop potential efforts by partisan actors to steal more congressional seats through extreme gerrymandering — including in Ohio, where leaders will draw new congressional maps this year.

• And while partisan actors try to overturn an election in what one state supreme court justice said could be called a “bloodless coup,” we’re mobilizing grassroots activists in North Carolina and around the country to fight for fair elections and fair maps.
