Dear John,

Right now, Maine lawmakers are considering a dangerous bill–LD 556–that would put the profits of the fossil fuel industry over the interests of Mainers. A vote is happening tomorrow, and we need your help today to stop it.

All across Maine, towns and cities, residents, and local leaders are working to reduce heating bills and indoor air pollution by getting off the volatile market of dirty fossil fuels and switching to safer and more stable alternatives, such as electric heat pumps. This bill is just one example of many across the country sponsored by the fossil fuel industry to protect their bottom line at the expense of the health of local communities.

LD 556 would prohibit municipalities from regulating or limiting fossil fuel energy providers. As enshrined in the Maine Constitution, Maine towns and cities have the right to set their own standards for energy, efficiency, and public health policies based on the needs of their own residents. Instead of protecting choice, this bill would take away that right.

This same bill was defeated last session , and for good reason. LD 556:
* Puts the state’s thumb on the scale in favor of fossil fuel companies , despite overwhelming evidence that emissions cause climate change, poor health outcomes, extreme weather, and rising sea levels.
* Violates Maine’s Constitution "Home Rule" which grants municipalities the right to make decisions in the best interest of their community.
