John, if you haven’t seen Sinners yet..WYD??!! When Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan link up, you know you’re about to see something special.
But don’t worry, NO SPOILERS below! Today we’re only talking themes and why this is such an important film.
First up, we have to acknowledge Ryan Coogler just made a genre-defying horror movie. Sinners scored the biggest opening for an original movie (since Jordan Peele’s Us in 2019) and the second biggest opening for an original horror film this decade, is the only horror film in over 35 years to receive an “A” Cinemascore, and is also the best reviewed wide release this decade with a 98% Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes.
That’s despite outlets like The New York Times, and Variety trying to tear down its success. 🙄
How’s that for Black people running the horror genre?!
But the importance of Sinners goes far beyond record breaking earnings, and accolades.
Sinners is so much more than a vampire movie. We see Black love in all forms, between family, brothers, and community. We love to see a full-figured, dark-skinned Black woman as a romantic lead.
We see the evolution of music, the roots of blues, community, freedom, and Black struggle explored in unique and awe-inspiring ways.
This movie is truly a testament to one of our most important pillars: Arts.
Movies like this, art like this, directors and actors like this are what we get when we invest in Black creativity. This is what we get when we expand opportunity beyond only the most privileged.
Because at the end of the day, Sinners is a movie about US. It’s about our culture, our music, and white supremacy taking from us while hating us. It’s a reflection of what we continue to see to this day. It’s a reminder that even right now we’re in a battle to protect our community from evil.
These are the stories that need to be told. These are the movies that need to be made. And this is why we do what we do. Freedom to thrive isn’t just about basic necessities being met (though that must come first)—it’s about being inspired by beautiful, meaningful art on a daily basis.
True liberation means cultural freedom as well as the preservation of our history, creativity, and culture.
If you can, help support our fight for that future today.
Also, feel free to reply to our email with your thoughts, theories, and feelings about Sinners. There’s so much to unpack here!
And pro-tip if you haven’t seen the movie yet, don’t leave during the credits!!
With love,
Black Lives Matter
Our grassroots movement is pushing for Black liberation every single day. We are striving to create a world where Black people do so much more than just survive. It’s time we thrive.
As an organization one of our biggest hurdles is consistency.
A recurring contribution of anything you can afford goes a long way as we plan for the months, years, and even decades ahead. This is the most effective way for small-dollar donors (like you) to power our Black liberation work.
Will you make a recurring contribution of $5 or more today so that we can keep building momentum for our movement?
