THE FORUM DAILY

Over the past week, three mothers of United States citizens were arrested and deported while attending routine check-ins with Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE). In two of the cases, children — all U.S. citizens — were deported alongside their mothers, reports Marc Levy of the Associated Press

The mothers did not have an opportunity to speak with their lawyers or relatives before their deportation, Levy reports.

"We have no idea what ICE was telling them, and in [one] case, what has come to light is that ICE didn’t give them another alternative," said Gracie Willis of the National Immigration Project. "They didn’t give them a choice, that these mothers only had the option to take their children with them despite loving caregivers being available in the United States to keep them here."

In better news, the administration has restored student visa registrations for thousands of foreign students studying in the U.S., report Kyle Cheney and Josh Gerstein of Politico

The swell of visa cancellations focused mainly on individuals with minor — and often dismissed — legal infractions. The restoration was announced Friday after multiple judges issued restraining orders on student visa cancellations.

Meanwhile, the president is expected to sign an executive order today targeting so-called sanctuary jurisdictions, reports Michelle Hackman of The Wall Street Journal.

This executive order is expected to direct the attorney general and Department of Homeland Security to gather a list of such jurisdictions, Hackman reports. It comes after a federal judge on Thursday blocked the administration "from denying or conditioning the use of federal funds to ‘sanctuary’ jurisdictions," as Janie Har of the Associated Press reported.

A reminder that the federal government can’t commandeer local officials into carrying out immigration efforts, and that there’s no place in the U.S. where federal immigration laws are not in effect.
