Right now, Donald Trump is testing the bounds of his power by arresting and deporting immigrants with no due process. Here’s where things stand:
We’ve all seen the horrifying videos online. Immigrants are being kidnapped off the streets, pulled from their homes or their cars, even from citizenship hearings. Some are being disappeared to detention centers across the country, and others are deported to a foreign prison while their families have no idea where they are.
In many cases, the rationale for these deportations are baseless accusations of gang ties — or simply having a tattoo. Being in the wrong place at the wrong time. And in some cases, it all comes down to an administrative error.
That’s what happened to Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a resident of Maryland. He was deported due to a paperwork error (seriously), and is now imprisoned in El Salvador. The Supreme Court unanimously ruled that the Trump administration must bring Kilmar back, but so far Trump is refusing to comply.
This isn’t just cruel — it’s unlawful, dangerous, and it’s happening across the country, in our neighborhoods and communities.
And now Trump is saying that he wants to deport U.S. citizens, too.
If you or someone you know is stopped by ICE, you have rights. Here’s what to know:
✅ You have the right to remain silent.
✅ You do not have to answer questions about your immigration status. (But if you are a non-citizen and have your immigration papers on you, you must show them if asked by an immigration agent.)
✅ You have the right to speak to a lawyer.
✅ And you do not have to let ICE into your home without a signed warrant.
The ACLU has English and Spanish language resources that are available here [[link removed]] — please share with your friends, family, and neighbors. The more people who know about their rights, the harder it is for this administration to get away with these abuses.
We can’t stop all the harm overnight — but we can do what we can to protect each other right now.
More to come soon,
Sara
