John,
As the Texas state legislature closes in on passing a new $6.5 billion for border security,1 the question is: is that spending really necessary?
Most Texans say it’s not.
A poll from UT Austin’s Texas Politics Project shows that a majority of Texas voters don’t think the state is spending too little on border security. Why might they think that? Maybe it’s because they recognize the bigger problems in our communities.
Across Texas, people are struggling to keep up with the cost of living and a lack of access to basic resources needed to thrive. They know what they need is more money for things like strong public schools and social services, not billions more for Trump’s crackdown on the border.
In many cases, it’s the bare necessities. Some estimates say more than a million people – including 30,000 border residents – in Texas don’t have access to reliable drinking water. Thousands more lack access to any full-service hospitals near where they live.2 Our border communities see billions of dollars come into town, but not for the basics they need to live.
We need more legislators who understand the struggles of these working Texans, and will pass budgets that address their needs – not billions more for Trump’s agenda.
Powered by People is committed to supporting candidates running to represent the people, not the far-right’s agenda. We’re ready to continue registering and mobilizing voters in every corner of Texas, but we need your help.
Thank you,
