One of our newer leaders, Elise ran her first trip in June 2023—but she is quickly becoming one of our more prolific with 10 trips in 2024 and 10 more on the docket for this year!
Elise describes leading trips as the perfect marriage of many of her skills and interests: She likes people (“which is important,” she laughs) loves to travel and go on adventures, and she loves to cook. In fact, when planning her trips, she researches foods iconic to the areas in which they are traveling, to bring a bit of the local culture to the group’s menu. For example, she made an Indigenous recipe while in Cape Cod, Pinchos de Pollo and fish stew in Puerto Rico.
Though Elise hasn’t been a National Outings leader for long, she is passionate about the program. When compared to other trip operators, she feels the focus on environmental advocacy and conservation messaging sets us apart. Also unique are our participants; the people who go on our trips tend to be like-minded, friendly, well-traveled, outdoor-enthusiasts, who are engaged in their communities and want to make a difference in the world. She has seen close friendships forged on Sierra Club trips, people who come solo and find friends who become travel buddies on future trips. Finally, Elise appreciates the expertise of fellow volunteer leaders and concessionaires who enhance every trip with their vast knowledge of the area’s ecosystem, wildlife, and culture.
Thank you, Elise, for your service with Sierra Club Outings!
Join Elise on an upcoming trip!
