This year — particularly last month — has been challenging for children. Natural disasters are driving children away from their homes, conflicts are stripping them of an education, and at the same time, foreign aid funding cuts are cutting their access to lifesaving and life-sustaining services.
Your support enables our team to quickly and effectively respond to children's needs when emergencies strike in the U.S. and around the world. Whether it’s providing shelter after an earthquake damages their home in Myanmar, helping children recover from malnutrition in Kenya or tending to their mental health needs after experiencing disaster in North Carolina, your support helps us be there for children.
Read more below to learn about your impact for children over the past month.
Responding to the earthquake in Myanmar
Last month, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar, destroying homes and key infrastructure. Fear of aftershocks has forced families to live in makeshift tents, including a young mother of a 4-year-old and her ten family members. Save the Children is providing safe shelter, and supporters like you are making it happen.
Helping children recover from malnutrition in Kenya
After 18-month-old Ereng was diagnosed with malnutrition, Charles, a Save the Children Health promoter, treated her until recovery. She gained 5 lbs in two months and is now thriving.
When Hurricane Helene hit North Carolina, it destroyed buildings, key infrastructure and more. Yet, the impact it left on children was invisible to most. Save the Children caregiver workshops supported families, specifically mothers and children, by helping them cope and overcome the trauma they experienced.
Keeping children safe and learning in times of conflict
Since the war started two years ago in Ukraine, children have been forced to hide in shelters, basements and even cellars when sirens are on. In response, Save the Children is renovating school shelters and providing safe spaces to keep children comfortable when bomb threats arise.
Earlier this year, wildfires in California destroyed neighborhoods and decimated children’s schools, daycare centers and playgrounds. Our supporters immediately stepped up. Thanks to your generosity, we’re responding with long-term recovery efforts, including rebuilding schools, providing spaces for kids to learn and ensuring children get the mental health support they need.
Many children across the globe are facing devastating challenges that restrict their access to food, water, education and health care. Monthly donors help us effectively prepare and consistently address kids’ most urgent needs.
