This is the Trump administration’s latest authoritarian move — targeting the Smithsonian Institution.

In a sweeping executive order, Trump accused the Smithsonian of “distorting” U.S. history and threatened to withhold $1.3 billion in federal funding unless the institution rewrites its exhibits to fit his narrow, racist worldview.

His order specifically targets the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the forthcoming American Women’s History Museum, and exhibits about transgender Americans. This isn’t just censorship — it’s a blatant attempt to erase the histories of entire communities. It’s about silencing facts that make Trump and his allies uncomfortable.

But here’s the good news: the Smithsonian doesn’t answer to Trump alone. The Board of Regents — which includes Senators, Representatives, and private citizens — has the power to reject Trump’s demands and defend the integrity of our critical historical and educational institutions.
