Dear Friend,
It’s always great to be back in the district, on the ground, in community, and face-to-face with the people who inspire everything I do in Congress. This newsletter highlights just a few of the moments we’ve shared recently as we fight for a better future for all Minnesotans. I’m proud to be your voice in Washington and even prouder to walk with you right here at home.
100 Years of theThe Phyllis Wheatley Community Center
This year marks a century of service and unwavering commitment to North Minneapolis for the Phyllis Wheatley Community Center. For 100 years, this organization has lifted up generations through education, advocacy, and community care. I was proud to honor their legacy by submitting a Congressional Record Statement recognizing the Center’s profound impact. Here’s to 100 more years of resilience and love in action.
April Town Hall
Over 500 of you packed Shiloh Temple in North Minneapolis on Monday night for our town hall and it couldn’t be clearer – House Democrats are ready to defend our democracy. We came together because we know this administration’s policies are a five-alarm fire for our freedoms and our future. In the face of dangerous budget cuts to education and Medicaid, I'm standing up and speaking out. I was proud to co-host this town hall alongside DFL Majority Leader Jamie Long, Senators Omar Fateh and Doron Clark, and Representatives Esther Agbaje, Emma Greenman, Katie Jones, Sydney Jordan, Samantha Sencer-Mura, Aisha Gomez, Michael Howard, and Anquam Mahamoud. Watch the full town hall here.
Annual Legislative Lunch with State Legislatures
I hosted my annual legislative lunch with leaders from around CD5 to ensure we’re doing everything we can, from the state level to federal, to protect Minnesotans from Congressional Republicans' policies which attempts to gut Medicaid, cut children with disabilities’ access to education, and strip workers’ protections. I’m incredibly grateful for our partnership and shared commitment to building a stronger Minnesota for all our communities.
Protecting Social Security
According to the Social Security Administration, over 1.1 million Minnesotans rely on Social Security benefits to put food on the table, keep a roof over their heads, and afford life-saving medication, the same critical benefits that are facing cuts in the House Republican Budget Resolution. That’s why I hosted a press conference this week at The Legends at Silver Lake Village in St. Anthony, where I stood alongside seniors to raise the alarm about the devastating impact of the House Republican Budget Resolution, which includes proposals that could slash Social Security. We heard heartfelt stories from seniors and veterans who worked their whole lives and now face the threat of losing the very benefits they’ve earned. I will not stand by while the safety and dignity of our elders are put on the chopping block. Watch my remarks here.
Visiting Students at Wellstone International High School
On Thursday, I visited Wellstone International High School’s new school-based health clinic, and had the chance to speak directly with students about their experiences and about my work in Congress fighting for equitable access to health care and education.
Meeting with The National Association of Letter Carriers
A functioning public mail system is an indispensable service. Minnesota seniors, small businesses, and rural communities rely on USPS to receive their medications and pay their bills. I sat down with letter carriers from The National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 9 to thank them for their service to Minneapolis residents and ensure we’re doing everything we can to protect USPS from privatization.
Three Rivers Park District’s annual State of the Parks
The Three Rivers Park District is a culmination of strong partnerships across our community — from everyday people, local government, schools, and businesses. Thanks to our collaboration, last year we brought home over $1.6 million in federal funding to make the Sochacki Park in Golden Valley and Robbinsdale more accessible — an achievement I was proud to highlight at this year’s Three Rivers Park District’s annual State of the Parks. This funding will support essential upgrades like safe, ADA-compliant trails and accessible park features that ensure everyone can enjoy the beauty and connection our parks provide. I’m proud to champion this work in Congress and will continue fighting to bring home the resources our communities deserve.
In Service,
Ilhan Omar
