Neighbors,

As we close out the week, I want to take a moment to thank everyone who continues to stay engaged and connected with what’s happening across our city.

On Tuesday, I had the honor of hosting a Ward 8 Town Hall at The Temple of Praise, where I heard directly from Ward 8 residents about their concerns, ideas, and the priorities they would like to see addressed. I am grateful to the community leaders, agency representatives, and neighbors who joined us and shared their perspectives — your voices are essential to the work we do.

While we celebrated that important community engagement, yesterday brought difficult news: Moody’s Rating Agency announced a downgrade to the District’s credit rating. This is certainly not the news we wanted to hear, but we remain committed to working together to maintain the District’s fiscal strength and protect the progress we’ve made for our residents.

Finally, a quick but important reminder — the deadline to obtain your REAL ID is approaching quickly on May 7, 2025. If you haven't already updated your ID, now is the time to act to ensure you’re able to travel and access federal facilities without interruption.

Thank you for being engaged, for speaking up, and for believing in the future of our city.

In service,
Kenyan
Statement from Councilmember Kenyan R. McDuffie on Moody's Credit Rating Downgrade of the District of Columbia
Time Sensitive - Get Your Real ID Before the Deadline!

Beginning May 7, 2025, the REAL ID Act will go into full effect. Enforced by the Department of Homeland Security and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), this new requirement impacts how residents travel and access federal facilities.

What is REAL ID?
REAL ID is a federal standard for state-issued driver’s licenses and ID cards. A REAL ID-compliant card has a star in the upper-right corner and meets higher security standards.

Why is it important?
Starting May 7, you will need a REAL ID (or another TSA-accepted ID, such as a passport) to:
* Board domestic flights
* Enter certain federal buildings
* Access military bases

What should you do?
If your current ID is not REAL ID-compliant, you will be turned away at airport security or restricted from entering certain federal sites after May 7. To upgrade:
* Visit your local DMV with the required documents (proof of identity, Social Security number, and two proofs of D.C. residency)
* Learn more: dhs.gov/real-id ([link removed])
* TSA guidance: tsa.gov/real-id ([link removed])

✅ Don’t delay — DMV appointments are filling up fast.

Ward 8 Town Hall

On Tuesday evening, I had the honor of hosting a Ward 8 Town Hall in partnership with The Temple of Praise, bringing residents, community leaders, and government agencies together for an evening of updates, conversation, and connection.

The event opened with a warm welcome and invocation from Bishop Glenn Staples, Senior Pastor at The Temple of Praise. I was proud to deliver opening remarks alongside Lamont Mitchell, Chairman of the Anacostia Coordinating Council, highlighting our shared commitment to listening to residents and addressing key community priorities.

Throughout the evening, attendees heard important updates from District agencies, including:
* Monica Evans, Executive Director of the DC Board of Elections, who shared updates on voter engagement and election resources.
* Captain James Dorrough, Acting Commander of MPD’s 7th District, who discussed public safety efforts and community policing initiatives.
* Marcus Coates, Deputy Director of the DC Department of Parks and Recreation, who highlighted ongoing investments in recreation centers, programs, and green spaces in Ward 8.

On the education front, we were joined by:
* Jacque Patterson, President of the DC State Board of Education, and
* LaJoy Johnson-Law, Ward 8 Representative on the DC State Board of Education,
who provided valuable insights into the District’s education priorities and how we are working together to support Ward 8 students and families.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, shared your perspectives, and helped make this town hall a powerful example of community engagement in action. Together, we are building a stronger Ward 8 and a stronger DC.
Empowering Youth Through Cycling: Dunbar High School's Bike Bus

On Wednesday, April 23, I had the pleasure of joining Dunbar High School's morning Bike Bus event, organized by health & physical education teacher Alex Clark. Mr. Clark also leads Prime Ability, a youth development program dedicated to empowering BIPOC youth through cycling.

Starting at 7:30 AM, I stopped by to speak with Mr. Clark and the students participating in the ride. It was inspiring to see how this initiative not only promotes physical activity but also builds confidence, community, and accountability among students.

Programs like this show the powerful impact of investing in our young people and creating pathways for growth, wellness, and leadership.
Team McDuffie - Ward 7 Outreach

On Tuesday, April 22, Team McDuffie was out in Ward 7 tabling along the 3700 block of Minnesota Avenue NE—connecting with residents, sharing helpful resources, and partnering with local agencies to support our community.

We’ll be back next week! Join us on Tuesday, April 29, from 9:00–11:00 AM at the corner of Benning Road and Minnesota Avenue NE as we continue our outreach efforts and uplift the voices of Ward 7.
MPD 5D Citizens Advisory Council (CAC) Retirement for Assistant Chief Sylvan Altieri

This week, Team McDuffie had the honor of attending the Fifth District Citizens Advisory Council’s (5D CAC) retirement celebration for Assistant Chief Sylvan Altieri. Chief Altieri, who has served our city with distinction for over two decades, was recognized for his leadership, dedication, and contributions to public safety across the District.

The evening also provided an opportunity for community members to meet Assistant Chief Jeffrey Kopp and Fifth District Commander Rooney, ushering in the next chapter of leadership for 5D.

In the photo above, you’ll see ANC 5B04 Commissioner Ra Amin, Fern Collins from DC Doors, Chief Sylvan Altieri, and Team McDuffie’s very own Kelley Cislo.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Chief Altieri on his well-earned retirement and remain committed to strengthening community partnerships with MPD leadership.
Team McDuffie Does a Public Safety Walk with MPD in Ivy City

On Tuesday, Team McDuffie joined the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), the Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency (CSOSA), the Department of Health (DOH), the Mayor’s Office of Community Relations and Services (MOCR), and ANC Commissioner Sabrina Rhodes for a proactive safety walk with local businesses and community agencies.

Together, we walked through key corridors to engage business owners, hear concerns firsthand, and identify strategies to address the recent uptick in car break-ins. This effort is part of a citywide initiative — proactive safety walks are happening across the District. If you would like a walk conducted in your neighborhood, we encourage you to reach out to your District Commander to request one.

We remain committed to working collaboratively across agencies and with the community to enhance public safety and keep our neighborhoods secure.
Clark Construction Hiring Event

Yesterday, Team McDuffie had the pleasure of attending the Clark Construction Hiring Fair at District E at Capital One Arena. Hosted by Clark Construction in partnership with the Skyland Workforce Center, the DC Department of Employment Services (DOES), the United Planning Organization (UPO), and the DC Infrastructure Academy (DCIA), the event connected DC residents with real career opportunities in the construction industry.

This initiative highlights the ongoing investment in workforce development across the District — creating pathways to good-paying jobs, building a stronger local economy, and ensuring that more residents can access the opportunities tied to DC’s growth.
