Legislative Update

Dear Neighbors,

It has been another busy week here at the Capitol.

On Thursday, I took an important step on the House floor alongside my colleagues as we declared April 24th as Child Abuse Awareness Day here at the Capitol.

April is nationally recognized as Child Abuse Awareness Month, and this cause is deeply personal to me. As someone who experienced abuse as a child, I’ve made it my mission to push for real change in how we protect Minnesota’s kids.

This week, the Senate passed the companion to my bill, House File 1346 (which passed unanimously in the house), which improves training so more people can recognize and respond to signs of abuse.

*State of the State Address*

This week, Governor Walz delivered his State of the State address. While he spoke about unity and being “pro-business,” his words didn’t reflect the reality many Minnesotans are facing. House Republicans are actively working to roll back the tax hikes his administration enacted last biennium, policies that have placed significant strain on small businesses. One example is the Paid Family and Medical Leave Act (PFMLA), which imposes costly mandates and tax burdens on our small businesses.

What’s more concerning is that the governor failed to acknowledge our looming $6 billion deficit or take any responsibility for the $18 billion surplus that’s already been spent. Minnesotans deserve leadership that is transparent, fiscally responsible, and enacts policies that support, not burden, our communities.

*County News *

Carver County responded to potential property tax hikes due to state budget proposal.

Carver County could see a significant property tax increase in 2026, potentially exceeding 20%, largely driven by Governor Walz’s proposed state budget. The budget includes an 8% levy increase that would shift substantial costs for essential services—such as Medicaid and waiver programs—onto counties, without granting them authority over how these programs are structured or delivered. Rising operational costs, including wages, benefits, and inflation, further compound the financial pressure. While the County supports fair and equitable state funding, officials are concerned that these cost shifts could place an unsustainable burden on local taxpayers. County leaders are actively reviewing the proposal’s impact and advocating for a more balanced solution that safeguards both services and residents. As Board Chair Tom Workman stated, “Shifting the responsibility for these costs to the local level, without the ability to influence them, places an undue burden on local taxpayers—and that is unacceptable.”

*Events*

Yesterday was Minnesota Cattleman's Steak on a Stick day at the Capitol--one of the best days of the year!

I am pictured below with Rep. Torkelson and Rev. Jeff Evans who is the CEO of the MN Family Council.
