John,
The roots of our democracy do not lie in the marble halls of Washington, they are found in neighborhoods across America where people come together to serve and build something better. That’s what AmeriCorps represents and that’s what’s under attack.
Recently, I led 148 of my colleagues in Congress in sending a letter to President Donald Trump, demanding that he reverse his cuts to AmeriCorps. I then wrote an op-ed with U.S. News & World Report to explain how critical the work done by AmeriCorps is.
I’ve seen firsthand what these programs can do. At the National “I Have a Dream” Foundation, I worked side-by-side with AmeriCorps members, helping at-risk youth stay in school, get to college and build their lives, and with the National Coalition for the Homeless. That experience changed the trajectory of my life and it changed lives in those communities.
If these cuts are not reversed, vital programs will be stopped in their tracks. Recruitment and deployment of AmeriCorps members who work in schools, build homes, and help communities recover from natural disasters will be halted entirely. Communities that rely on this service — families, children, veterans — will be left behind.
Public service is one of the most purely good things our government has ever done. In attacking AmeriCorps, President Trump and his allies are showing they do not care about families, communities, or the future we’re trying to build together.
I need you to speak out with us. Read my message below about the incredible work AmeriCorps does. Then, become a citizen co-sponsor of our congressional letter to President Trump by adding your name today. Tell them to reverse these cuts and stop sabotaging public service >> [link removed]
Thank you,

Senator: Shutting down a cheap and cost-efficient program will hurt America.
By Chris Coons | Contributor
Today I sent a letter to President Donald Trump, co-signed by 148 other Democrats in the Senate and the House, protesting the administration’s moves to shut down AmeriCorps, a shining example of Americans’ commitment to serving our communities.
Americans have always been defined by a generosity of spirit and a willingness to help our neighbors. Beloved children’s television host Fred Rogers famously reminded us to “always look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” Helping is an American value that has guided us since our nation’s founding.
But our current president and his biggest donor, Elon Musk, whom Trump has put in charge of slashing the federal government, have been systematically firing helpers all across our country.
When a community is ripped apart by fire or devastated by a tornado, we expect three groups to help: the National Guard; the Federal Emergency Management Agency and other government workers; and volunteers. More than 30 years ago, Republicans and Democrats came together to create AmeriCorps, often referred to as the domestic Peace Corps, to fill the need for volunteers. AmeriCorps finds and trains these volunteers, who come to our aid after every disaster and stay long after the national cameras have left.
