Flash Update: Devastating Airstrikes in Ukraine

Dear John,

In the early hours of 24 April, Russia launched a series of deadly air strikes across several regions in Ukraine. One hit the capital Kyiv, where many of my colleagues and I live, with devastating consequences: 12 people died and more than 80 have been injured, including children and a pregnant woman.

I was sleeping in my bed, like most people in Kyiv, when I was awakened by the air sirens and then, shortly after, the sounds of loud explosions, which continued for hours as drones and missiles kept attacking the city. While I was able to shelter in safety, my concern and thoughts go to the millions of Ukrainians who have been living under constant bombardment for more than three years now.

After yesterday’s attack, more than 1,000 people in Kyiv are directly impacted as their homes were damaged. One of them is Iryna, 57, whom my team met yesterday: "I live on the neighbouring street, but the blast was so huge that all windows in my two-room apartment are gone. It is going to rain in the coming days, so it is vital that we can cover the damaged windows with the provided materials.”

Just hours after the attacks, my colleagues and our partners were on the ground, providing emergency aid, and the work continues. People like Iryna are receiving emergency shelter materials to help them repair and cover broken windows, roofs and doors. We are also providing psychosocial assistance to people who are traumatized, as well as legal support for those who have lost their documents. Our priority is to provide critical supplies and protection for people like Iryna, to help communities get back on their feet and recover after the devastating attacks.

But we cannot continue delivering without your support. We rely on donors like you to show up for war-affected people in Ukraine and displaced people wherever they may be, so that they can receive emergency supplies, psychosocial care and more.

Please, will you make a gift today to provide displaced people with the support they deserve?

Thank you for standing with us.
