This week I held a town hall in my district’s largest city, Stockton. It was an overflow crowd - over 300 people attended to share their thoughts and ideas about how we can fight back against what’s going on in D.C.
I thought you’d be interested in my abbreviated notes from the event:
* People are very concerned about Donald Trump + Elon Musk’s unconstitutional efforts to dismantle our government.
* Trump’s tariffs are killing people’s 401k’s and they are livid we may be headed into a recession
* Social security and Medicare were huge topics - people very worried about the GOP slashing of benefits
I’ll tell you what I told them: I’m also livid and scared and frustrated. We need to channel these feelings into effective action. We need to ignore the noise and focus on how we can push back in an organized way (ex. litigation, force the media to pay attention, use Appropriations process to fight back).
Democrats also need to be holding more town halls - not only does it give people a chance to gather and organize, but it highlights how scared Republicans are to face their voters.
I’m proud to be one of the most accessible Members of Congress. For me, it’s simple - if you aren’t willing to listen to your voters, you shouldn’t be in office. Right now, Congressional Republicans know they can’t defend their positions to voters, so they aren’t even trying. They need to be held accountable.
Thanks to everyone who attended our town hall. We have a lot of work to do, and I’m constantly inspired by this team’s energy and determination.
