John, Social Security is under attack.

As a public system funded by payroll taxes, Social Security provides around 73 million Americans with retirement, survivors, and disability benefits. These are benefits that people earn after a lifetime of work—benefits that they count on.

But thanks to Donald Trump and Elon Musk, Social Security is at risk.

Since taking office, Trump has allowed Musk and DOGE to cut the agency’s staff and budget, resulting in system outages and threatening individuals’ access to their benefits. They’ve laid out plans to fire thousands of Social Security Administration workers, they’ve got an executive order to stop payments through paper checks, forcing seniors to use direct deposit, and they’re closing Social Security field offices around the country.

If they succeed in gutting Social Security, the effects would be devastating for millions of Americans and only make their lives tougher and more uncertain—all to give corporations and the ultra-rich a tax break. We can’t let that happen.
