Trump is targeting the grassroots dollars that help fund his opposition Indivisibles,
Yesterday afternoon, President Trump signed an executive memo targeting ActBlue, the fundraising platform used by much of the progressive ecosystem -- including Indivisible -- and the entire Democratic Party.
The memo instructs the Department of Justice to investigate ActBlue for allegedly allowing illegal, foreign campaign contributions. ActBlue already has processes in place to catch these contributions and report them, but Trump is moving ahead with the investigations anyways. Why? Because Republicans know that ActBlue plays a crucial role in raising grassroots dollars for Trump’s opponents.
This is straight out of the authoritarian playbook. Rather than outlaw opposition groups or ban rival political parties outright, authoritarians -- at least initially -- seek more subtle ways to cement one-party rule and undermine civil society. That’s Trump’s aim here. By attacking ActBlue, Trump wants to deprive his opposition of grassroots resources and crush the resistance to his autocratic agenda.
It’s not going to work. We won’t let it.
While we are, of course, preparing for every contingency -- including direct attacks by the administration on Indivisible -- for now, we’re still able to take donations through ActBlue and have no plans to abandon the platform due to Trump’s thuggery. If you want to send a message that the resistance will not be intimidated by Trump’s tyrannical actions, you can support us with a donation right now.
At the end of your donation, ActBlue will ask if you want to “tip” them to support the platform. Please consider doing so.

The impending investigation is meant to burden ActBlue, but for now, it won’t interrupt their operations. Nothing will change about how we process grassroots donations or keep our organizing funded in the near term. While there is no need to panic, we need to acknowledge that this is an unprecedented attack on the president’s political opponents. And we can’t assume they’ll stop here.
If ActBlue were forced to cease operations, we could move to a different fundraising system. But it would take years to rebuild our monthly sustainer program, which accounts for up to half of our grassroots revenue each month. All of that money is processed via ActBlue -- and it’d all shut off in an instant.
The same dire challenge would be felt by thousands of other progressive nonprofits, the Democratic Party, and tens of thousands of candidates from school board to US Senate. And that just scratches the surface of the incredible burdens (financial, logistical, and otherwise) it would take to shift from a system the progressive movement has spent decades building and refining.
ActBlue is an incredibly important and effective tool for grassroots fundraising -- that is why the Trump administration is targeting them. But they’ve assured us they will not back down and they will not be intimidated.
We’re glad that ActBlue is showing courage in this moment and we share their commitment to continue resisting Trump’s authoritarian agenda. But we need your help to do so. If you’re able to pitch in to keep our grassroots movement funded, please do so here.
And again, if you can spare a tip for ActBlue, we know they will greatly appreciate your support.
