Hello from the State Capitol,
Word is spreading fast: illegal aliens in Minnesota now have access to free healthcare, and the program is costing taxpayers far more than originally promised.
With current enrollment, that cost of free health care for illegals has exploded to an estimated $550 million, far higher than the original $196 million projection over four years.
In 2023, a Democrat-led legislature and Governor Walz expanded MinnesotaCare eligibility to illegal immigrants. MinnesotaCare is a health coverage program for low-income individuals and families who do not have access to employee-sponsored health insurance and do not qualify for Medical Assistance (MA).
According to the Minnesota Department of Health, 17,396 illegal immigrants are now enrolled in MinnesotaCare, more than twice the original estimate of 7,700.
In case you were wondering about transparency, the health department didn’t publicly share enrollment numbers until House Republicans repeatedly demanded answers. The data was finally confirmed in an email earlier this month.
With a $6 billion deficit looming, it’s clear that handing out taxpayer-funded health insurance to those in the country illegally is helping drive Minnesota straight into a financial crisis.
Meanwhile, Governor Walz wants to cut education funding for non-public school pupil aid, special education programming and charter schools. In other words, he’s attacking families who decided education freedom was their top priority and trying to push them back into the public school system.
It’s time to prioritize. It’s time to make common sense choices. It’s time to end the government freebies for people who shouldn’t be here in the first place and use these funds to improve our schools and nursing homes, and take care of those who are unable to care for themselves.
In liberty,
Drew
