Friend,

I just know that our nation's Founding Fathers are turning in their graves.

Nearly 250 years after American independence from tyrannical rule, the sitting president of the United States, Donald Trump, is acting every bit the tyrant.

Issuing blizzards of executive decrees, even as the checks and balances of our court system try to rein in his unlawful behavior, Trump ignores rulings from federal courts – even from the Supreme Court, the highest in our land – more or less proclaiming himself king.

Trump's steamrolling over our Constitution and the rule of law has real-life consequences. One need look no further than the mega-prison in El Salvador, where Trump and his team wrongly deported a Maryland man, admitting it was an administrative error. Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia – a husband, a father to three children, and a sheet metal apprentice – was just taken. With no proper charges filed, no hearing, no legal representation. He remains a prisoner in a facility notorious for its human rights abuses, without ever having been charged with a crime by the United States or El Salvador. Federal judges have ruled against the administration’s unlawful hijacking. The Supreme Court of the United States has ruled 9-0 against it. And yet Trump continues resisting the Supreme Court's orders to facilitate Kilmar's return.

If this can happen to one resident, what does it portend about our rights and due process for the rest of us?

Trump's crackdown and forced disappearances of migrants are alarming enough in their own right. But it's being matched by his retribution campaign against universities and the nonprofit sector at large – using the threatened denial of promised federal funding to force institutions to bend to his will and radical ideals. He's even weaponizing the IRS against his personal enemies, while his administration seeks to ease IRS pressure on Trump friend, ally, and pillow-guy, Mike Lindell. He targets our institutions and undermines democracy while the Jan. 6 rioters who attacked our nation’s Capitol are pardoned and walk free.

This is not the constitutional republic that our Founding Fathers conceived – but rather, the very autocratic tyranny they sought to prevent. For two and a half centuries, our great experiment of democracy has persisted, and we must not allow the tyrant that is Donald Trump to undo it all.

I remain fully on the side of democracy. I will use every power I have in the Senate to protect the American people and our cherished democratic institutions from Trump's corruption and would-be authoritarianism. But this is a fight for all of us. We must all remain vigilant and continue to call out Trump's behavior as we see it: pure and unabashed tyranny that must be stopped.

Sincerely,

Dick
