Take Action TODAY to
Remove UltraProcessed Foods from School Lunches!
In line with Making California Health Again, A Voice for Choice Advocacy is working closely with the Environmental Working Group to pass AB 1264. This bill was introduced earlier this year by Assemblymember Gabriel, who previously championed getting synthetic dyes out of schools last year. AB 1264 would regulate the consumption of ultraprocessed foods in California schools, aiming to improve the nutritional quality of food served to children, tasking the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment to classify particularly harmful ultraprocessed foods by considering scientific evidence linking these foods to various health issues, such as obesity, diabetes, and other chronic diseases. (Full bill text: [link removed] [[link removed]] )
This bill passed through the Assembly Education Committee with bipartisan support a couple of weeks ago and is headed to the Assembly Committee on Environmental Safety and Toxic Materials next week. AVFCA and EWG want to ensure that it has the full support from this committee and therefore need your help making phone calls today. It shouldn't take more than a few minutes of your time.
Action Alert!
1) EVERYONE: TODAY call Asm Stan Ellis (R) and Asm Leticia Castillo urging them to vote YES on AB 1264.
Call Assemblymember Stan Ellis (916) 319-2032
Call Assemblymember Leticia Castillo (916) 319-2058
Suggested Language for these Republican legislators (Feel free to put in your own words): Hi, my name is ____. I’m calling to respectfully ask that Assemblymember [INSERT NAME] vote YES on AB 1264 when it is heard in the Assembly ESTM committee. This bill will phase harmful ultra-processed foods out of schools, helping reduce preventable health problems like obesity and diabetes in children, while supporting better focus and academic performance. Ultra-processed foods are loaded with added sugars, unhealthy fats, and artificial additives, which burden families with rising healthcare costs and contribute to long-term health issues. Removing them from schools helps ensure that parents—not schools or corporations—decide what their kids eat. This is a commonsense step toward Making America and California Health Again! Thank you for your time.
2) ESTM COMMITTEE MEMBER CONSTITUENTS: ONLY if you live or work in one of these Assemblymember's districts, call them urging them to vote YES on AB 1264.
Damon Connolly (Chair) (916) 319-2012
Rebecca Bauer-Kahan (916) 319-2016
Alex Lee (916) 319-2024
Tina McKinnor (916) 319-2061
Diane Papan (916) 319-2021

Suggested Language for your Democrat legislators (Feel free to put in your own words): Hi, my name is ____. I am one of Assemblymember [INSERT NAME]'s constituents and I’m calling to ask that he/she vote YES on AB 1264 in the Assembly ESTM committee. This bill will phase out harmful ultra-processed foods from school meals, helping to address rising rates of obesity and diabetes among children—especially in communities most impacted by diet-related health disparities—and improve educational outcomes. Ultra-processed foods are often filled with added sugars, unhealthy fats, and chemical additives, which contribute to long-term health risks and negatively affect kids' ability to focus and succeed in the classroom. Ensuring access to healthier food in schools is a key step toward equity and opportunity for all students. This bill supports the health and future of California’s children. Thank you for your time.
