Fellow activist,
The Trump regime’s attacks on our courts and immigration are only getting worse.
Last week, a U.S. citizen named Juan Carlos Lopez-Gomez was arrested in Florida by the Highway Patrol for speeding. According to Channel 3000, he was traveling to Florida for his construction job from his home in Georgia. After his stop, he was detained and charged with being in the U.S. illegally, despite being a United States citizen. Thankfully, he was able to prove his citizenship with a birth certificate and was released after being held for 48 hours by ICE.
This is not the only example of U.S. citizens being wrongfully arrested by ICE as Trump pushes to deport people without due process.
According to the Guardian, another U.S. citizen, named Jose Hermosillo, was detained in Arizona for nearly 10 days by immigration officials after they found him “without the proper immigration documents.” After his prolonged detention and wrongful arrest, a federal judge dismissed his case.
And of course, these instances echo the terrible deportation of Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, who, due to an “administrative error,” was sent to a dangerous and violent mega-prison in El Salvador and has yet to be returned home.
Trump is sending a clear message: Regardless of citizenship status, people need to be wary of this regime. In fact, he has gone as far as to float the idea of sending American citizens “convicted of violent crimes” to the prison in El Salvador, and his Attorney General, Pam Bondi, is allegedly studying the proposal.
This is a rule-of-law crisis. Trump is working to chip away at our democracy, making it more important than ever before that our state and federal courts remain fair and independent, and protected from the executive branch.
