IN THIS ASI E-BULLETIN:
We are hiring! Be part of Westminster’s ace policy team!
Publications: keeping our cash, and spending it better.
Events: Helen Whately MP on the future of work.
But first…
UK life expectancy has stalled. (So we’re not actually suffering government-inflicted misery for longer, it just feels like it.) Polls suggest that Reform could be the biggest grouping in Parliament after the next election. (It would be amusing to see Prime Minister Nigel Farage moving Cabinet meetings to the Red Lion pub across the road.) Meanwhile, the government has bailed out the Scunthorpe steel works (hopefully, on condition that it makes them a better backbone, but more probably to guarantee the supply of Whitehall tea urns). UK weapons manufacturers are looking for ways to avoid using US parts, a move known as ’Trump Proofing’. (Sounds better to me than the usual ‘gold plating’ that goes on.)
Rachel Reeves went to Washington, where she visited the IMF. She was trying to advance a US-UK trade deal. (If we could import US chlorinated chicken and export the UK weather, that would get my vote.)
And the trade unions are threatening a ’Summer of Discontent’. (It’s just like the 1978 Winter of Discontent, but with more oat milk iced lattes on the picket lines.)
But I digress...
WE ARE HIRING!
Policy Research/Data Manager
Communications/Digital Manager
Graduate Role
Our Policy Research / Data Manager will shape the Institute’s overall research and educational programmes and represent the Institute’s work in public settings.
Our Communications / Digital Manager will manage the Institute’s external communications with the media, promote our publications and commentary to print and broadcast media, shape the Institute’s overall communications and branding strategy.
For each of these roles, the list of responsibilities above is not exhaustive - the ASI is about making the most of the opportunities that arise, and we are looking for candidates with high entrepreneurial potential. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working under pressure, and will be rewarded with more responsibility and freedom than in a traditional policy institution
Interviews for these two roles will begin during the week of May 6th–9th so please do apply as soon as possible. We are looking to hire the right applicant and are flexible on the start date (but can offer an immediate start).
We are also looking for a promising graduate (graduating in 2025) to join the team, starting in September. Again, the exact role will be shaped around the most promising candidate, with the available streams including Research, Communications, Operations, Digital and Data. The successful candidate will become a full member of the most talented policy team in Westminster.
There’s no set deadline for this role, but the sooner you apply, the better!
RESEARCH
Waving money goodbye: Wealth Exodus: Stopping Non-Dom Flight
The abolition of the non-dom regime is already causing wealth creators to flee the UK at a time when we desperately need to keep them. And our latest research warns that this non-dom exodus could be even worse than anticipated. That’s because of punitive and arbitrary rules on non-doms—some of whom face an effective tax rate of 67% on their foreign earnings, plus extra tax on any income or capital gains they bring to the UK. Madness!
Buy smarter: Curing Procurement: Building a Government System Fit For The Future
Procurement errors (Errors—you mean total and utter ****-ups—Ed.) have already cost taxpayers £140 billion over the last thirty years, while only 9% of major government projects are running to time and on budget. And despite promises that SMEs will gain more government contracts, the share going to them has fallen. And now, plans to procure consultancy services centrally will crush departmental flexibility and add more red tape, rerouting £1.6bn to the big six suppliers and raising costs by over £129 million a year. Also madness!
EVENTS
Previously…
Lord Kamall, shadow minister of state for health and social care spoke at our April The Next Generation meeting. A fan of the Austrian economic tradition, he made the moral case for free-markets, explaining how charity rather than the state is the best way to care for the poor.
We also hosted the Global Enlightenment Forum - a whole-day academic conference centred around the growth, proliferation and application of Enlightenment thinking in the Arab and non-Western world. You can watch Lord Hannan’s lecture on Islam and the birth of market capitalism below.
Coming soon…
Join us (unless you are too old, like me—Ed.) for another The Next Generation event on Tuesday, 6th May. This time, we're delighted to be talking with the Rt. Hon. Helen Whately MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Work and Pensions. She's coming to talk about the state of work in the 21st century and how public policy can change to benefit today's working age population.
Join us on Thursday, 8th May to discuss if and how governments relate to market failure with Professor David Friedman.
When markets go awry, who is to blame? Some blame greedy profiteers, whilst others blame governments for tinkering with incentives and supply chains. Where does the truth lie? And what role should the government play when markets go wrong?
If you want to keep the torch burning, just £250 would help us put on an event enabling 80-100 youngsters to meet like-minded peers and learn more about free market ideas.

And I quote…
A message from Orwell that seems equally pertinent in this age when cops show up to your door over something rude you tweeted about some local councillor:
“During times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act.”
Bye!
