We are calling on university and college presidents to publicly oppose immigration enforcement actions on campus and commit to ensuring that their institutions will not cooperate voluntarily with federal immigration enforcement agencies that seek to detain or deport students or community members. We are calling on them to enforce and strengthen campus policies that limit cooperation with immigration authorities unless legally compelled by a judicial warrant or other due process.
This is a moral issue. It is a matter of conscience, of justice, and of leadership. We urge these leaders to stand with students. We are telling them loud and clear that they must refuse to let institutions of learning become sites of fear and exclusion. They must protect the ideals their campuses claim to uphold.
Our universities and colleges must be sanctuaries of knowledge, not enforcement zones.
