John,
The life of Pope Francis reminds us of our obligation to one another, especially the most vulnerable, the poor, the sick, the marginalized and the immigrant. The values he championed of humility, kindness and most of all — love — are being tested right now, here in this country and around the globe.
His passing is a moment to reflect on our own role in this world, how we treat one another, how we stand with those who are persecuted and vilified, how we extend love and kindness to those in need and to those with whom we may disagree. How to — as he showed us — withhold judgment on our differences and focus on our common condition as humans in an imperfect world. I find cause for hope in the example of his life, something we need right now.
It may be spring outside, but the days are growing darker, the hour is growing shorter. Those who would replace kindness with cruelty, civilization with barbarism, are on the rise. And those who would stop them have, until recently, seemed stunned and scattered.
But our faith in each other and in the future of this country is starting to pay off.
Last week we saw Sen. Chris Van Hollen travel to El Salvador in pursuit of justice and in defense of the constitution and our rights to due process and the protection of the law. His willingness to move beyond words and slogans in the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia is the example and inspiration we need.
At the same time we saw federal judges boldly upholding the rule of law and the U.S. Constitution, leading to two significant Supreme Court decisions that have placed a check on the Trump administration’s illegal activities.
And Saturday hundreds of mass demonstrations for the Constitution, for the rule of law and for our democracy took place across the country.
Action is the antidote to this administration, it is the key to victory and we’re seeing it right when we need it. Here’s how you can help keep this momentum going:
Keep the faith, keep up the fight and let us remember the example set by the good people around us who choose to stand and be counted at this moment… because “the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good people to do nothing.”
