John,

Palestinian activist and Columbia University graduate Mahmoud Khalil missed the birth of his child this week as he remains stuck in an ICE detention center just for participating in peaceful protests.

The Trump administration denied Mahmoud’s request for temporary release to attend his son’s birth and be by his wife’s side during this once-in-a-lifetime moment. The cruelty is the point.

Headline from NBC News reading "Wife of detained Columbia student Mahmoud Khalil announces birth of son in his absence". Subhead reads "Dr. Noor Abdalla said she welcomed the couple's son Monday without his father, despite a request for ICE to allow him to attend the birth." Below the header and subhead, there is a picture of Noor Abdalla, 28, in New York City on March 12. She is pregnant and wearing a green headscarf, a black sweater, and a large black shawl.

Meanwhile, Justice Democrats Rep. Ayanna Pressley joined a cohort of Congressmembers in visiting Mahmoud and Rumeysa Ozturk at the Louisiana ICE detention center where the two activists have been locked for over a month.

An Instagram post from Ayanna Pressley (@repayannapressley) reading "I traveled to Louisiana with @SenMarkeyMemes & @RepMcGovern to visit the ICE facilities Mahmoud Khalil & my constituent Rumeysa Ozturk are being unlawfully held in harrowing conditions. To Rumeysa, Mahmoud, and everyone who has been harmed by this lawless White House: we see you and we won't stop fighting for you. To Donald Trump: your abuses of power and attacks on our constitutional rights will NOT go unchecked." The text is accompanied by a picture of the three congresspeople outside the facility looking concerned. Markey is on the right wearing a blue blazer and a white shirt, Pressley is center wearing a blue denim jacket with a white shirt and a brown hat. McGovern is on the left wearing a dark blue blazer with a black polo underneath.

We need more courageous leaders like Ayanna willing to speak out and stand up for all of our basic rights to freedom of speech and due process. Far too many members of Congress remain silent in the face of this authoritarian administration.

We’re trying to change that by electing more working-class progressives to Congress in 2026. Will you directly support our efforts to recruit and endorse bold candidates to challenge Republicans and Do-Nothing Democrats with a contribution today?
