Donald Trump just took executive action targeting ActBlue, the primary fundraising platform for Democrats. He’s directing the Department of Justice to launch a sham investigation to lay the groundwork to take down Democrats’ primary fundraising platform.

He and the right-wing ecosystem have been signaling for months that they want to take ActBlue offline — not because of fraud or foreign interference or whatever other conspiracies they peddle to justify this.

If that were the case, this action would’ve equally targeted WinRed — the Republican equivalent, which follows the same structure as ActBlue.

This is about eliminating a critical piece of Democrats’ infrastructure and cutting off funding for Trump’s political opposition. This is an attempt to starve our movement of resources to make it harder for us to raise the resources required to fight back. It’s a classic move in authoritarian regimes.

In the post-Citizens United era, grassroots donations have been a critical way to level the playing field for Democrats against Republicans’ billionaire and corporate backers. In 2024, six donors each spent more than $100 million on the election. Every single one of them was a Republican.

So let’s be clear: Trump’s move today is a brazen attempt to make it easier for billionaires and corporations to buy elections. If he starves Democrats of resources, he can make it look like there are elections, but ensure they aren’t really fair elections. He knows that, with enough money, Republicans will win, and he can successfully convert America into an autocracy.

This is why the work I’m doing to build an opposition movement and mass mobilize the American people matters. The crisis is here, and the only way to preserve democracy is by harnessing our collective power against the billionaire takeover of our government.

We cannot become numb or normalize what’s happening. Trump is trying to overwhelm us with news and distractions, but the plan is clear as day. It’s our job to call it out and mobilize against it.
