John,
These Trump tariffs are giving us whiplash.
Tariffs, which raise the price of goods via a tax on imports, are being weaponized by the Trump administration to “put America first.” If it was really about putting America first, we’d be addressing the systemic inequalities that are embedded in our culture. And we’d be interrogating WHO “America” is when they say that… but let’s focus on the facts:
First, Trump announced taxes on imported goods from almost every country in the world.
Then, he rolled them back after the stock market plummeted – taking credit for resurrecting the market he had crashed only days earlier. (Let’s not even get into the insider trading of it all..)
Now, every day Trump waffles on whether or not to impose a tax as high as 145% on Chinese goods.
Here’s the bottom line: the stuff we buy is about to get a lot more expensive so that Trump can claim a foreign policy win – all while the economy and our pocketbooks take a hit.
Tariffs are estimated to raise costs on the middle class by at least $1500. There’s no way around that.
Whether it’s increasing the cost of your clothing and groceries, reigniting inflation, causing a trade and tariff war, or even starting another recession — there is no good reason for them to be implemented.
Tariffs hurt Black communities and communities of color the most.
Communities where income is lower, and bad policies are felt the hardest.
Not only do these new taxes increase the cost of everyday essentials, but they also widen the gap between economic classes.
A 5% increase on the cost of groceries may not be felt by a family making a six-figure income, but for a family living paycheck to paycheck it’s a whole different story.
John, all of this — attacking the Department of Education, disappearing people without due process, and tariffs raising prices for everyone — is not putting America first. It’s part of a common thread: Targeting Black and brown people systematically while making the rich richer and more powerful.
In order to help our communities thrive, we need to show that we’re paying attention and fighting back. Sign our petition right now to tell the Trump administration that these tariffs are not working.
In solidarity,
Black Lives Matter
Our grassroots movement is pushing for Black liberation every single day. We are striving to create a world where Black people do so much more than just survive. It’s time we thrive.
As an organization one of our biggest hurdles is consistency.
A recurring contribution of anything you can afford goes a long way as we plan for the months, years, and even decades ahead. This is the most effective way for small-dollar donors (like you) to power our Black liberation work.
Will you make a recurring contribution of $5 or more today so that we can keep building momentum for our movement?
