We're focusing on paddling safely this summer!

*This year, the Recreational Boating Safety Program is highlighting the importance of life jacket wear while paddling, and we need your help!*

Each summer, millions of Washingtonians get out on the water on kayaks, canoes and stand-up paddleboards—and we’re launching a survey to help us better understand your safety habits. The survey will take approximately five minutes to complete, and the data will help inform education and safety efforts by the program in years to come.

The survey is open to all Washington residents and all skill levels!

May 15th is Water Safety Day! Water Safety Day was created in 2024 with the passing of House Bill 1750, also known as Yori’s Law. The day aims to raise awareness of the danger of drowning and promote water safety skills.

While many boaters don’t set sail with the intention of falling in, anyone can become an unplanned swimmer! These tips apply to boaters, recreators and swimmers alike:


* Wear a Life Jacket
* Beware of hazards like cold water
* Reach or throw, but don’t go in the water to help someone

The Washington State Parks Recreational Boating Safety Program invites you to support the message by sharing with your community and check for events in your area! April Pools Day events are supported by the Recreational Boating Safety Program and are a great introduction to water safety for young swimmers.

To qualify for a Washington State Boater Education Card, boaters must complete a state approved course which meets the national boating education standards.

Training the State’s Marine Law Enforcement Officers

The Recreational Boating Safety Program coordinates the training of Marine Law Enforcement Officers who patrol Washington Waterways and help keep boaters safe. This spring, hundreds of new officers will learn how to maneuver their patrol vessels and all the nautical skills necessary to patrol Washington’s water ways.
