LEGISLATIVE UPDATE:
On Thursday April 17, a shooter on the campus of FSU took the lives of 2 people, injured 6, and forever changed the lives of countless others. Our hearts go out to the families of the killed and wish a speedy recovery to the injured. In the Capitol, committee meetings adjourned. The 22nd Floor of the Capitol has views of the whole city, and it seemed like every intern or young person working in the building was there, watching the sirens and reaching out to family and friends. So many people have connections to the school.
It is Week 8 out of the 9 week scheduled session. There are rumblings about extending the session to finish the budget and possibly addressing bills that are close to completion.
A bill to highlight this week is CS/SB 1288 Parental Rights. This bill focuses on ensuring that parents play a more active role in their children’s interactions with adults in school and with doctors. It requires parental involvement when the child is given surveys, any use of a biofeedback device, providing medical treatments, and other interactions. It passed its last House committee on Monday and will be heading to the floor soon. The Senate companion bill, CS/HB 1505, also passed its final committee and is on its way to the Senate floor soon as well.
