It's all About the Seniors! District Update

April 24, 2025
Dear John xxxxxx,

As I wrap up another busy district work period, I wanted to take a moment to share what we've been up to in the community. From protecting Social Security to expanding access to Medicaid and defending hard-earned benefits for seniors, my team hit the ground running to make sure every Texan gets the dignity and care they deserve.

Senior Tour | Social Security Day of Action
We kicked off the week with our Senior Tour in honor of Social Security Day of Action—visiting senior centers across the district to hear directly from my constituents about the challenges they’re facing.
They’ve earned their Social Security benefits, and I’m fighting to keep offices open, services timely and accessible, and protections in place.

Partnering with County Judge Lina Hidalgo | Medicaid Day of Action
For our Medicaid Day of Action, I joined forces with Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo to bring awareness to the critical county programs that would be affected by federal cuts to Medicaid.
Together, we visited groups around the district to talk about the importance of having access to healthcare and how we must keep pushing to ensure no Texan is left behind.
From Ben Taub to L.B.J hospital, millions of families, children, seniors, and people with disabilities rely on Medicaid for the care they need. I’m fighting to protect this lifeline.

Town Hall with Congressman Joaquin Castro | Affordability Week of Action
For Affordability Week of Action, I was proud to welcome Congressman Joaquin Castro for a Town Hall. We heard directly from seniors about the fight to protect their benefits.
People rely on Social Security, Medicare, and SNAP for food, medicine, and basic needs, and rising costs are impacting their everyday lives. These programs are lifelines built on a lifetime of work. Our promise: we’re fighting to make life more affordable—especially for those who paved the way for us.

Houston-area Social Security offices, phone lines slammed as staffing dwindles amid Trump cuts

“These are not luxuries,” U.S. Rep. Sylvia Garcia, a Houston Democrat, told a Social Security town hall in Aldine on Tuesday. “They are not handouts, and they sure as hell are not up for debate.”

At town halls, Democrats turn attention to Social Security and Medicaid to fight Trump's Policies

"There was another example on Tuesday in Houston, where Castro traveled down Interstate 10 to have one with U.S. Rep. Sylvia Garcia in her district. Reporter Dug Begley was there and said the two Democrats took turns blasting the right for trying to cut social service programs that working Texans and seniors rely on."

Is it a sundial? A shade from the sun?   Mason Park's new $20M solar   sculpture is all that — and more.

"It's going to transform Mason Park and put the East End on the map in a whole new, big way," said U.S. Rep. Sylvia Garcia, D-Houston. "The arch of time will be a 100-foot-tall, free-standing sundial, the largest of its kind in the world."

I am always grateful for the opportunity to spend time back home, connecting with the people and communities I am proud to serve in Congress. These conversations help shape the work I do back in Washington—and reminds me why the fight for affordability, healthcare access, and retirement security is so important. Thank you for continuing to share your stories.

And as I always say, it's ALL about the seniors!

Sincerely,
