Time for morels! Foraging season has begun

The soil is warming up, rain is in the forecast, and morels are being spotted around the state. Nebraska's morel mushroom season is now underway!

This will be the best time of year to find these prized delicacies. Once they've emerged, individual clusters may appear for just two to three weeks at a time. Learn about the best places to look, what to bring and how to cook them in the link below.

Commission approves 2025 big game hunting recommendations

At a recent meeting, Nebraska Game and Parks approved staff's recommendations for 2025 deer, antelope and elk hunting seasons. Season dates were approved, and a range of permits were reduced in number, which will help Game and Parks meet its management goals for big game populations.

Campfires temporarily banned at all Game and Parks areas

A temporary campfire ban is in place at all Nebraska state park areas and wildlife management areas, in conjunction with a statewide ban on fires through April 30. Camp stoves using liquid or gas fuel are permitted; read more for details on which kinds of fires are prohibited, as well as precautions park visitors can take right now.

Mark your calendars: Free Fishing and Park Entry Day is May 17

Every other day of the year, you need a permit to go fishing or to enter a Nebraska state park. But not on Free Fishing and Park Entry Day, which falls on Saturday, May 17, this year.

To celebrate, several parks are hosting family-friendly activities featuring free fishing instruction and loaner gear. But any state park area can be a great destination for, say, a group picnic or hike. Find a park near you [ [link removed] ], bring a rod and reel, and go explore!
