Hi John,

Yesterday, the district attorneys prosecuting animal rescuer Zoe Rosenberg requested to delay her upcoming trial, which was scheduled to start May 16th. Zoe is facing felony and misdemeanor charges for rescuing four suffering chickens from Perdue's Petaluma Poultry slaughterhouse back in 2023. The district attorneys presented no good argument for delaying the trial. They just said they need more time to prepare.

Unfortunately, the judge granted their request despite objections from Zoe's attorney, Chris Carraway with the Animal Activist Legal Defense Project. Chris explained how prolonging the case would negatively impact Zoe's school schedule and her health and wellbeing. District Attorney Matthew Hobson argued that the impact on Zoe personally is "irrelevant."

New trial dates have not yet been set for the Perdue Rescue Trial, though the attorneys suggested dates in August. We may learn the new trial dates as soon as next week. We will keep you posted when we have them. For now, we still have a busy month ahead.

The Animal Liberation Conference is still happening from May 23-27, and now, May 16-22 will be a week full of action against Perdue’s Petaluma Poultry. Instead of attending the trial as planned, we'll use that time we had blocked off to protest all week and shine a spotlight on the ongoing animal cruelty at Perdue's facilities in Sonoma County. We'll continue to call on the Sonoma County District Attorney to prosecute animal cruelty, not animal rescuers. You can, too.
Sadly, this frustrating change of plans isn't all that surprising at this point. This is the same court that previously delayed a DxE case because one of the prosecution's witnesses was taking a trip to Disneyland. They also held felony charges over my head for 5 years before dropping them on the day trial started with no reason given.

The District Attorney wants to act like animal rescuers are dangerous criminals -- even forcing Zoe to wear a GPS ankle monitor for the last 16 months! -- but at the same time, they are in no hurry to get to trial. Clearly, they know Zoe is not a threat to society. She's a compassionate person who wants to help suffering animals and create a better world.

We all know by now the U.S. "justice" system is incredibly broken. For one thing, there is no justice for animals. But we are working to change that -- and this delay won't stop us. It just gives us more time to make even more noise before trial.

In solidarity,
Cassie
