There are currently 188,000 residents in Macomb County that still have not switched their driver’s licenses to the new REAL ID (deadline May 7). Without this ID or a passport, these residents of Macomb County will not be able to board an airplane.

The Macomb County’s Clerk Anthony G. Forlini is partnering with the Secretary of State for two “Mobile Office” events at the Clerk’s Office 120 North Main Street facility, where County residents can satisfy the State’s upcoming REAL ID requirements.  The events will be held Friday, April 25 (10 a.m to 4 p.m.) and Friday, May 2 (10 a.m to 4 p.m.). 

“We understand there are currently 188,000 residents in Macomb County that still have not switched their driver’s licenses to the new REAL ID. Without this ID or a passport, these residents of Macomb County will not be able to board an airplane. We don’t want any of our residents to be encumbered and not be able to fly,” said Macomb County Clerk Anthony G. Forlini.

Beginning May 7, 2025, Michigan residents will need to present a REAL ID-compliant document to fly within the United States and enter certain federal facilities to comply with federal law. REAL ID requirements ensure the secure production and issuance of licenses and IDs to prevent copying or altering.

“In order to make it easier to meet the REAL ID deadline, these ‘mobile offices’ will provide a 'one stop shop' where residents can obtain their Macomb County birth certificates (people born in Macomb County) or marriage licenses (if applied for in Macomb County) in order to apply for a REAL ID right on the spot,” said Clerk Forlini.

Michigan’s old license and ID design, which is being phased out by January 2029, features a star in a gold circle to indicate REAL ID compliance. The state’s new license design features a star in a silhouette of Michigan. Both versions of the star are acceptable. Enhanced licenses and IDs are automatically REAL ID-compliant, regardless of whether they display the star.
