| Friend, The Senate is about to vote on one of the worst voter suppression bills in history.(1) The Republican majority of the U.S. House of Representatives passed the SAVE Act, a bill that would require citizens to show a birth certificate or passport in order to register (or re-register) to vote. And worse, the bill is intentionally unclear as to whether states have to allow voters to register if their legal names do not match their birth certificates.(2) The 21 million people who don’t have access to their birth certificates.(3) Married women who have taken their spouses’ names. Trans and nonbinary people who have changed their names. They all could be barred from voting. Fortunately, the SAVE Act will need 60 votes in the Senate to pass, so we have an excellent chance to stop this bill in its tracks. Will you sign our coalition petition and tell your senators to vote NO on the SAVE Act?
The members of Congress pushing the SAVE Act say they are solving voter fraud by noncitizens -- a nonexistent problem. What the SAVE Act does accomplish is bringing us one step closer to a Christian nationalist government, one in which women and LGBTQ+ people lose their votes.(4) Moreover, the SAVE Act forces people to register to vote in person -- killing voter registration drives, voter registration by mail, and online registration.(5) We have to put a stop to the SAVE Act before it becomes law.
