John,

The decision of whether to run for reelection has not been easy – I truly love the job of being a United States Senator.

But in my heart, I know it's time to pass the torch to the next generation of leadership who will fight for our country and democracy.

So, I am announcing today that I will not be seeking reelection at the end of my term.

The people of Illinois have honored me with this responsibility longer than anyone elected to the Senate in our state’s history, and I am truly grateful.

If you can, I hope you’ll take a few moments to watch this short message from me about why I’ve made this decision, and what it means to me to have you on my team. [[link removed]]

During my time in the Senate, I have served as the Senate Democratic Whip, Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee for the 117th and 118th Congress, and Illinois' longest serving Senator.

I'm proud to have confirmed a record number of judges to lifetime appointments, including Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson and 234 others. I’ve fought to curb tobacco and e-cigarette use by passing legislation ending smoking on airplanes, I supported DACA with President Obama, and I have continuously supported medical and scientific research.

I have given more than half of my life to House and Senate Congressional service, and I'm grateful that I could stand up to power on behalf of the people of Illinois and our Country.

To hear more about what we’ve been able to accomplish as a team, please watch this short video – and know that I couldn’t have done any of this without your support. [[link removed]]

Right now, the challenges facing our Country are historic and unprecedented. The threats to our Democracy and way of life are real, and I can assure you that I will do everything in my power to fight for Illinois and the future of our Country every day of my remaining time in the Senate.

Now that I have this announcement behind me, I need to get back to work.

Thank you again for supporting me, John.
