This year has been undoubtedly tough for us all. But even in tough years, I’m grateful to report that the movement we have created together pays off. Lawmakers are listening and changing course, even on tough bills we oppose.
For example, we successfully amended HB 177, a bill that originally would have removed thousands of children from their Medicaid coverage by placing unaffordable requirements on parents with low incomes. After I gave my own testimony as a new mom and advocate, the committee chair asked the bill’s sponsor to consult with Arise to address our concerns. Working with our partners and directly impacted advocates, we got the sponsor to amend the bill, removing the most concerning language. Arise will continue to oppose bills aimed at shredding our social safety net, from both state and federal leaders. And we aren’t slowing down. Just last month, more than 200 Arise members joined us for Legislative Day in Montgomery to advocate in person to their lawmakers for a better Alabama.
