Friends, I want to share an update with you on our five-part Democratic strategy to fight back against the chaos and unconstitutional actions of the Trump Administration and un-elected billionaire Elon Musk — and ways you can get involved.
Read on for the latest actions in five key areas: Courts, Congress, States, Elections, and Activism.
Courts
Trump has signed more than a hundred executive actions this year, and as of April 15, at least 74 judicial rulings have ordered at least temporary halts to these initiatives, thanks to a well-coordinated court strategy that began on Inauguration Day.
* The Supreme Court ruled unanimously that Trump must return Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland man who was deported to El Salvador by mistake.
* DOGE efforts to gut agencies like USAID and cut funding on scientific research at the National Institutes of Health are on hold.
* There is also pending legal action challenging the overall freeze on foreign aid, civil servant firings, the federal funding freeze, the powers of DOGE, immigration policies, and more.
We won’t win all of these fights, and it’s hard to tell how the Supreme Court would rule on these if given the chance, but what’s clear is that legal pushback from partners and allies continues to make an impact.
Congress
I’m committed to using every legislative tool at my disposal to counter Trump’s chaotic and destructive actions:
Earlier this month we had a big win when the Senate passed my legislation to un-do Trump’s wildly unpopular tariffs on Canadian imports. And last week, my colleagues and I introduced new bipartisan legislation to challenge the legality of Trump’s sweeping global tariffs that have already sent the economy into a tailspin — no president has the authority to unilaterally wage a trade war.
As summer approaches, Congress will be focused on passing the budget, and I will be fighting hard against the disastrous GOP budget plan that’s straight out of Project 2025. Not only does it promise to slash critical programs to pay for tax breaks for billionaires, it would raise the deficit by unprecedented levels. More to come on how you can help push back.
States
Dozens of state attorneys general have spoken out about Trump’s attacks on law firms and judges, and they’ve taken legal action to protect their states from dangerous orders like health funding cuts and student visa cancellations. Democratic governors and state officials are also working to put protections in place and sound the alarm about the negative impacts of this Administration on people’s everyday lives. Local elected officials will continue to play a key role in blocking the implementation of Trump’s illegal orders.
Elections
Democrats have seen victories in special elections all across the country — in Iowa, New York, Minnesota, Virginia, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania! The major Democratic win in the Wisconsin State Supreme Court election earlier this month was a particularly strong sign for our party, especially given the millions of dollars thrown at the race by Elon Musk.
This November, Virginia has a major election of our own, and I hope you’ll take action and get involved. This will be the first statewide opportunity for Democrats to make a strong statement of our electoral intentions, so we need to win — and win big. If you’re able, chip in now to my Common Ground PAC, which will be laser-focused on supporting our great VA Democrats on the ballot this November. [[link removed]] [[link removed]]
Activism
A key part of our strategy is to turn up the pressure on this Administration through sustained, peaceful public activism. That’s where you come in.
To push for change, we need visible, vocal, and consistent pushback — and we’ve seen how effective it can be. When people show up, speak out, and organize, Republicans in swing districts start to feel the heat. Some are already backing away from the most extreme parts of their party’s agenda. That’s no coincidence.
Here’s how you can help keep the pressure on:
→ Join or support groups on the front lines like Indivisible [[link removed]] , ACLU [[link removed]] , NAACP [[link removed]] , Planned Parenthood [[link removed]] , and Human Rights Campaign [[link removed]] .
→ Pick up the phone and call your representatives at (202) 224-3121 and tell them where you stand. Right now, it’s important to let them know you oppose budget cuts to programs like Medicaid and Social Security.
→ A really important part of this work is making sure the GOP hears loud and clear what the public thinks about their support of Trump’s actions, so calling Congress is even more critical for those who have Republican representatives or senators.
→ Show up at town halls, write letters to the editor, talk to your neighbors — and don’t underestimate the power of going digital. Share trusted info online. Join virtual events. Post your story. The more people see others speaking out, the more likely they are to join in.
I know sometimes posting online or even calling the Capitol switchboard can feel like you’re shouting into the void — but it does more than you may know. When people who care about the future of our country commit to speaking out in great numbers, the power of our activism will send a clear message to the Trump Administration and members of Congress who enable it: We see what you’re doing, and we won’t let it stand.
I know how difficult this moment is, and I appreciate hearing from each and every one of you. I promise that fighting for our democracy and our values is worth it, and I’ll be right by your side every single day.
Thanks for being here. More soon,
Tim Kaine
