At PolicyLink, we believe we are the founders of a nation yet to be born. We are part of a legacy of founders before us – our ancestors who have brought us closer to a vision of democracy that serves all. They fought to expand rights during Reconstruction, and secured landmark legal victories during the Civil Rights movement. Their legacy reminds us to remain steady in the storm, understanding that systemic change takes generations. Today, in 2025, we have to ground ourselves as part of this arc of history, and remain
committed to our long-term vision.
We explored this journey at a recent webinar, looking back at the historic promise and potential of equal protection in our nation, and what we must do today to both defend and expand upon these protections. Watch the highlights below:

As the speakers discussed, we all benefit from the landmark Civil Rights legislation fought for by countless Civil Rights leaders, but now find ourselves on the defensive for rights won decades ago. Today, we need to be thinking beyond reacting to this moment, and envision how we can proactively build governing structures that truly serve all. We need to be the founders of a redesigned nation that truly serves all – one that has never existed.
We must redesign the systems and structures of governing from the ground up, even if it feels beyond what we can imagine today. As our ancestors before us did their work, we must do ours. We must be the founders of a nation where all can thrive. |
