Earth Day and Beyond: Why We Care!

April 22 marks the 55th anniversary of Earth Day – a collaboration of citizens and government – proposed by Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson in 1969. During the first Earth Day celebration in 1970, NYC Mayor John Lindsay warned β€œthe business of pollution is the twin brother of the business of poverty and despair.” By the end of 1970, the Nixon administration had created the Environmental Protection Agency and signed the Clean Air Act into law.

Environmental justice advocates, scientists, and common sense argue that the health of our planet and people are intertwined. We all want clean air, clean water, healthy food, and a beautiful home for all the wonderful beings we share this planet with.

The city of Charlotte continues to take steps to improve the health, resilience and beauty of our community and planet. Charlotte's updated Strategic Energy Action Plan Plus (SEAP+) is an updated and expanded roadmap for reaching the city's climate and energy goals. SEAP+ builds on the 2018 plan and outlines bold goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, transition to clean energy and create a more resilient community. We invite you to review the SEAP+
