John,
Anti-abortion activists’ latest obsession? Wastewater.
You read that right: just last week, the Texas Senate heard a proposed bill that would require state plants to test wastewater for abortion medication and the hormones associated with birth control.
In states like Oklahoma, Montana, Arizona, and more, legislation in the same vein has been introduced, based on the completely unfounded assertion that mifepristone, one of the most common abortion medications, is poisoning the groundwater.
And this trend is no coincidence: these bills are pushed by the notorious anti-abortion group Students for Life, which has decided to co-opt the language of environmental justice in an effort to win over young voters, who are overwhelmingly pro-choice.
These bills aren’t about protecting our communities.
They’re about further stigmatizing abortion care and spreading deliberate disinformation about abortion medication, which is deeply studied and safe.
The truth is, reproductive freedom and environmental justice are linked, but certainly not in the ways that Students for Life would like you to believe.
A world with reproductive freedom is one in which *everyone* can raise a healthy, thriving family if and when they choose to—and that means a world with safe water and clean air for our kids.
And environmental degradation has outsized impacts for pregnant people: toxins in the environment, increased salinity in the water supply, and air pollution can all impact maternal and reproductive health (learn more HERE!).
Tomorrow is Earth Day, and we’re more committed than ever to electing candidates who will fight for the safety of our communities, and who understand that healthy communities require a healthy planet.
Thank you for being with us—and happy Earth Day!
