friend, as I write to you from Montana, dangerous bills are advancing in both Congress and local statehouses that could directly threaten the future of gray wolves in the Northern Rockies.
The ESA Amendments Act, the Pet and Livestock Protection Act, and local bills like HB 259 in Montana threaten the gray wolf population. The Montana bill would legalize cruel methods like baiting and night hunting with infrared scopes. If passed, this legislation would put wolf packs, like the 8 Mile Pack and Lolo Pack, at direct risk—undermining decades of recovery work and further endangering Montana's gray wolves.
And the threats don't stop there. Bills like these further empower Congress to strip Endangered Species Act protections from wildlife at the behest of big corporations and developers – ignoring science and public outcry.
But I have good news. Our efforts in Montana have already defeated HB176 and HB 258, bills that would have mandated unlimited hunting quotas when the gray wolf population reached just 550, extended the wolf hunting season by three months, and allowed the killing of wolf pups. This shows that we are scoring wins where it really counts. We just need your help to keep up the fight.
friend, the 8 Mile Pack, one of the most well-known in the Northern Rockies region, has made a remarkable recovery, successfully raising pups and maintaining their territory in the rugged wilds of Montana. However, without Endangered Species Act protections and with local bills advancing, they and other packs, like the Lolo Pack, could be vulnerable to increased hunting, trapping, and habitat destruction.
If these bills pass, the already fragile wolf populations in the Northern Rockies could suffer irreparable damage. Increased hunting and the continued destruction of their habitat would make it harder for gray wolves to thrive there. We can't let this happen, so we need your help to defend our wolves and their home.
