BOB LINN RIGHTEOUSNESS & JUSTICE IN POLITICS Last Tuesday evening at the Oklahoma History Center, Dr. Carol Swain helped us honor two of Oklahoma’s greatest statesmen. Former Governor Frank Keating and former Secretary of Commerce, Russell Perry did more than serve with honor and distinction. They challenged the political winds of their times in order to walk the pathways of integrity. In 1954, Ten-year-old Frank Keating and his brothers rode English saddles in a Tulsa Horse Show event. After their performance was over, he naturally asked his dad for directions to a restroom. His dad pointed to a sign that said, “No Colored Allowed” with an arrow pointing downward. On his return, he asked his dad what the sign meant. His dad replied, in short, that the sign was the reason Frank would never be a Democrat. To elaborate a bit, his dad explained that the Democrat party was the party of the Civil War, the Ku Klux Klan, Jim Crow, Segregation, Injustice, and the Poll Tax. That moment became a memory that shaped his life. It was a memory he brought with him to the Oklahoma Governor’s office. Governor Keating appointed the most successful African American in the Southwest to the position of Secretary of Commerce. That man was Russell Perry who rose from destitution as an eleven-year-old boy with no home to become a noted and accomplished teenager and a wildly successful businessman and banker. Governor Keating contacted Stratton Taylor, the Senate President Pro Tem to let him know that he was nominating Mr. Perry. Taylor was the ranking Democrat Senator. The 1999 Senate was composed of 29 Democrats and 19 Republicans. Taylor responded by letting him know that the Democrat caucus was unified in its refusal to give Russell Perry even a hearing, let alone a confirmation. Russell Perry served the state of Oklahoma unconfirmed and unpaid. That moment at the Tulsa Horse Show, the moment Frank Keating learned what “No Colored Allowed” meant, remains with him still today. Last Tuesday evening, Governor Keating said that it takes courage to make change. It is the lack of courage that causes people to remain silent. They are immobilized by fear. The week before, thanks to the tenacious work of Senator Shane Jett, Russell M. Perry appeared before the Oklahoma Senate where a Resolution affirming Russell Perry was passed. After the reading of the resolution, Governor Keating, Senator Shane Jett and Senator Bill Coleman expressed their appreciation for the Senate for having confirmed ex post facto the title of Secretary of Commerce to the man who for four years served with no formal Senate acclamation. National commentator, Dr. Carol Swain, was on hand to put a bow on the meeting as she discussed the waning impact of the WOKE agenda in academia. It dovetailed well with the evening as she also began life in abject poverty. Both Secretary Perry and Dr. Swain began life in difficult circumstances. They each overcame their adversity through assuming personal responsibility for themselves and spent none of their time blaming others. Both of them have lived a live which have become lessons on the shallow and deceitful message of D.E.I. The WOKE educational agenda is crippling the minds of our youth and preventing them from seeing the world as it really is. The past two weeks have been historic for the state. Justice entered the political arena. Our next meeting will be at the Oklahoma History Center with a number of other special guests you’ll want to hear from including Governor Kevin Stitt who will discuss what has been a politically tumultuous past few months here in Oklahoma.
